$35,000 in Grants to Energize Stewardship of the Maine Island Trail

Two philanthropic foundations have selected MITA as the recipient of a total of $35,000 in grants to fund increased volunteer care of the wild islands of the Maine Island Trail. The William Bingham Foundation has just provided $20,000 to use for the restructuring and expansion of MITA’s Island Adopter Program.

The Maine Island Trail Association celebrated its many volunteers statewide during its annual Stewardship Party and awards ceremony on August 20. Some 80 guests attended from Maine and beyond to honor a few of the hundreds of volunteers who log thousands of hours each year caring for the wild islands of Maine.

Diverse Coalition of Groups Removes 220 Derelict Lobster Traps from Island

ROUND POND, ME –Local lobstermen and members of the business community here teamed up with 25 volunteers from around the state to clean 220 derelict lobster traps from the shores of Bar Island in Muscongus Bay.

“This project shows what can be accomplished when diverse groups work together to tackle a tough problem,” said Doug Welch, Executive Director of the Maine Island Trail Association (MITA), which coordinated the event. “We received an extraordinary level of cooperation from our partners on this project, including local fishermen, the Round Pound Village Improvement Society, the Maine Coastal Program, the State Marine Patrol, and the island owners themselves.

The Maine Island Trail Association and the Northern Forest Canoe Trail (NFCT) are thrilled to present the Second Annual Paddlers Film Fest at the Jewett Auditorium at Southern Maine Community College on Thursday, June 4th from 7-9 p.m. (Doors open at 6 p.m.; come and mingle.)
