A Guide to Low-Impact Recreational Techniques for Maine’s fragile islands

Maine’s coastal islands may look rugged from afar, but they are remarkably fragile ecosystems. As more and more travelers visit the islands in search of solitude and wilderness or simply to explore, it is more important than ever for visitors to practice low-impact techniques in order to reduce their footprint on these special places.

To this end, MITA encourages all island users to adopt the principles of Leave No Trace. By embracing the seven Leave No Trace (LNT) principles listed below, island-goers can make significant strides toward lessening their own personal impact and helping to preserve healthy island ecosystems for the future.
