Be Considerate of Other Visitors
When you cruise the Maine coast you are among thousands of other boaters, some at work and others at play. A little boating and island etiquette can go a long way.
Boating Etiquette
Recognize that the waters, docks, and launch ramps are shared resources and that your vacation day might be someone else’s workday. Always yield to fishing boats while they are at work and never disturb fishing gear. Have gear ready for quick loading and unloading at launch ramps. Always observe the “rules of the road” while underway.
Island Etiquette
If there are other people on the island, respect their privacy. Look for a landing site some distance away, or consider another island altogether. With limited camping options on the islands, small parties should use small campsites and leave larger camps for larger groups. Help preserve the wilderness look of the island by keeping your visual impact low. Pull small boats out of sight on durable surfaces and pitch tents inconspicuously in established campsites. Make sure your clothing and gear is not strewn all over the place. Let nature's sounds prevail - avoid loud voices and noises. The sound of electronic devices can ruin another’s wilderness experience.
