"The ultimate privacy is being fogbound...and how shocking it is to be able to see for miles the next day!"
- MITA Member, Stevens Island, June 27, 2009
If you spent time on the Maine coast early this summer, you will remember stretches of rain and fog - seemingly endless - through June and July, only to be followed by the most beautiful August and September in recent memory. While unrelenting rain may be an inconvenience in the moment, it is a reminder that contrasts are what so powerfully draw us to the Coast of Maine and a metaphor for our community that sees opportunity on contrast.
We are a strong community, yet one bound by a shared love of the solitude that wilderness islands provide. When we are alone on an island our solitude is absolute, but each island has legions of stewards who tend to it almost invisibly. Most importantly, we know that thoughtful use and stewardship of wilderness islands is better than neglect. MITA's strongest ability is its simultaneous embrace of seemingly contradictory ideas or seemingly incompatible interests to accomplish a common goal: the protection of Maine's coastal islands and our ability to enjoy them.
We need your help to ensure that the wonderful resource we share remains accessible and pristine for ourselves and for our children and grandchildren.
